Arsene Wenger has given a brutal assessment of the problems at Barcelona.

After another lackluster performance by Ernesto Valverde’s men, Wenger wasn’t holding back.

In an interview with beIN sports network, Wenger feels like the club has deeper underlying problems than what appears at face value.

He said:

“(Despite being) leaders of La Liga and their Champions League group… they are playing like a team in crisis.”

“The play is too slow, without dynamism, and very individualistic in the final meters.”

“When they lose the ball they could concede a goal on the counter because they aren’t closing down the space for the opponent.”

Wenger feels that they paying the price for being overly dependant on Lionel Messi, and have subsequently lost that Catalonian flare.

The former Arsenal manager, insists, that although the manager has to shoulder part of the blame, he is not totally at fault.

As far as Wenger is concerned, the problems at Barcelona run much deeper than the manager, and those at the very top need to shoulder some responsibility.

He added:

“Barcelona is an interesting case because they have a history of brilliant collective team play and then they also had Leo Messi who made the difference.”

“Today it seems they play expecting something from Messi.”

“Before the music was beautiful, of a fantastic team waiting for Messi to appear.”

“From outside it seems they’ve lost their charisma.”

Wenger is apparently on the shortlist for the Bayern Munich job, after Niko Kovac’s sacking.

Was tonight’s performance his attempt at an interview for the Barcelona job should it become available?
