The best teams from Mexico and the United States will play a small tournament, which will grow next season, in order to find the best club from both countries.
With the growth of Major League Soccer (MLS) in the United States and the penetration of the Mexican Liga MX in Spanish and English, football is becoming one of the biggest business in America.
The North American nation is hosting many of the International Champions Cup (ICC) matches.
But the MLS and the Liga MX have created their own tournament to decide once and for all who the best league is.
This is the Leagues Cup, an eight-team competition that will start today and will end on September 18th.
The competition has yet to start and next year will be expanded from eight to sixteen clubs.
Today Chicago Fire will host Cruz Azul, while Los Angeles Galaxy will do the same with Club Tijuana.
And tomorrow, Club America will visit Houston Dynamo, while Tigres UANL pays a visit to Real Salt Lake.
The winners will advance to the Semifinals to be played on August 20, while the big Final will be played in Las Vegas on September 18th.
Players like Fire’s Bastian Schweinsteiger have said this is an excellent opportunity to showcase their talents against their Mexican counterparts.
“It’s a good idea, especially since the rivalry between Mexican teams and American teams is growing,” he said.
“It’s going to be interesting to see.”
“I know it means for Mexican teams a lot to be playing against MLS teams,” he added.
“They want to come here and show they have better teams than the MLS. At the end of the day, we will see who has the better team.”
