PSG and Real Madrid are set to renew rivalries once again as the Champions League returns for the new season.
The Champions League showdown between PSG and Real Madrid is going to be quite a battle. The Ligue 1 giants have not been in the greatest form in the league so far but the same can be said of their Spanish counterparts whose consistency needs to improve considerably.
Neymar’s time to take a stand
The Brazilian was eager to leave PSG this summer but a compromise couldn’t be reached with Barcelona so the attacker is staying put. He might not be too happy about it but the fact of the matter is that Neymar needs to showcase his potential against Real Madrid on Wednesday.
The last time these two sides met was two years ago. PSG didn’t have the services of an injured Neymar and were eliminated in the last 16 as Real Madrid went on to lift the Champions League.
PSG have not been able to make it past the first knockout round three seasons in a row and this is something that needs to change. Neymar was specifically bought to aid the team’s progress in Europe.
This hasn’t happened so far but if Neymar can really focus on the task at hand, things might be better this season.
Icardi to prove doubters wrong
It is clear that this Real Madrid team really needs some time to gel in as a group. While the old guard knows what’s required, the Spaniards might struggle against a PSG side boasting another talented player in the shape of Mauro Icardi.
Now that his story with Inter Milan is pretty much over, the Argentine striker can now focus on doing well for his new team. With Kylian Mbappe out injured, a lot of onus falls on Icardi to do well for PSG.
In Italy, the striker was prolific and we expect something similar from him at PSG.
Goalkeeper crisis in Paris
While PSG might have great attacking talents, the goalkeeper situation is something that is worrying. Alphonse Areola was sold to Real Madrid and the visitors have abundance of attacking talent to really test Keylor Navas who is set to play against his former club soon after leaving them in the summer.
Eden Hazard was brought in as a galactico who is expected to make an immediate impact. The Belgian has only recently returned from injury but Zinedine Zidane is going to start the game with his mercurial attacker.
While it takes time to adapt to your new surroundings, this is a luxury the former Chelsea man doesn’t have…one of the many downsides of playing for Real Madrid.
The game against PSG would be a great test for the Belgian forward and a chance to showcase the world that the move to Real Madrid was something he deserved.
