Erling Braut Haaland’s old coach is baffled as to how Manchester United and Real Madrid missed out on the Norwegian striker.
Manchester United were the favorites for Haaland’s signature from RB Salzburg.
With his scoring rate, it was widely suspected that all of Europe’s big teams were in the running. Dortmund were probably outsiders for his signature at best.
The young striker has gone on to prove that he can cut it with the best. He is perhaps even more prolific in the tougher German Bundesliga than he was in the lowly Austrian version.
His former coach spoke to 90min and admits he is left wondering what was Europe’s elite clubs thinking.
However, he is not really bothered, as he is a Liverpool fan and would rather he made a move to Anfield at some point.
Alf Ingve Berntsen, who worked with the teenage striker at Byrne FK believes it is only a matter of time before he moves up again.
“I’m a fan of Liverpool, so of course I would like to see him play for them.”
“I sincerely believe that he has the skills to play at such a club.”
“He is already very good, he has shown a great personality, he scores a lot of goals whatever the level of the opponents, and he is only 19 years old.”
“He will continue to develop and in two years he will be one of the best.”
“I don’t know what the strategies of Real Madrid, Manchester United or the other big clubs are with regard to Erling.”
“I had been responsible for the six to eight best clubs in the world, I would have bought him immediately.”
The question on everyone’s lips now, is will Dortmund be able to hang on to such a talent, and what kind of price will he bring?
