Chelsea stumbled out of the Champions League after a 7-1 aggregate thrashing at the hands of German giants, Bayern Munich.
Robert Lewandowski had a dream night at the Allianz Arena. The Polish forward scored two and laid down two more, as Chelsea were humbled in Bavaria.
Akin to the 7-0 humbling of Barcelona some seasons ago, Frank Lampard’s youngsters were given a harsh reality check over the two legs. Such was their disastrous performance that the 4-1 result on the night and 7-1 aggregate was flattering for them.
Former forward, Tony Cascarino, could not fathom how Chelsea players made pivotal defensive errors. He questioned their coaching and lamented how they continue to make the same mistakes repeatedly.
“I don’t know who is coaching the players at Chelsea – they’re a mess!,” Cascarino told talkSPORT.
“Defensively, they are a total mess.”
“Watching them last night, they give up space all the time which is one of the worst things you can do, because people expose you and exploit what you give them, especially a team like Bayern.”
“I keep seeing the same things, it’s like Groundhog Day, like déjà vu – a player gets out wide, crosses it in the box, Chelsea’s center-backs are both looking at each other and someone heads it in or finishes it off quite simply.”
The defeat brings an end to Chelsea’s long 2019/20 campaign. While the players go on short vacations, the club will be busy in reinforcing the ailing squad.
