We have to go back in history in order to tell you why Leo Messi might not win the Golden Boot this season, it has to do with Samuel Eto’o.
Despite Leo Messi currently has 33 goals this season and is at the top of the Golden Boot table, there is a big chance he might not win it this year.
The FC Barcelona player might not be able to lift the sixth Golden Boot of his career because of how selfless he is to the collective cause.
In order to properly understand what we mean by this, we will compare his current situation to that of Samuel Eto’o at Barcelona.
The Cameroon international was denied the Golden Boot twice in his career because the team decided to think about the collective instead of him.
Coincidentally, the two times Eto’o lost his chance to win the prize, he lost against Uruguay international Diego Forlan.
The first time came during the 2004-05 season in which Barcelona won La Liga, Eto’o was denied the opportunity to win the prize because the club wanted to win the competition above everything else.
In order to get that trophy, manager Frank Rijkaard decided to give less time on the ball to the striker and more spotlight to players like Ronaldinho.
Eto’o always snapped back at the Dutch manager for not allowing him to get this award, he even came after his teammates for not passing him the ball.

The second time that Eto’o didn’t win this prize was during the 2008-09 season, when Barcelona won the Treble under Pep Guardiola.
Forlan was playing for Atletico Madrid that season and the Catalan club allowed the Uruguay international to surpass Eto’o with 32 goals.
This was even more hurtful for the African striker because he felt that he had the award in the bag with a few fixtures still left to play in the season.
However, Pep Guardiola decided to give more importance to the other competitions such as the Copa del Rey or the Champions League and Eto’o was the most affected player from these decisions.
To this day, Samuel still talks about how he was the most important player of that Barcelona squad and how he is the one who deserved the individual awards instead of Messi.
The Argentine is having a very different approach to this year’s Golden Boot Award possibility, one that he might not win this season.
Leo knows that the Champions League is the most important trophy this season and he doesn’t care if someone surpasses him at the top of the goal-scoring table by the end of the season in Europe.
There is only one player who can do that.

2) Mbappe🇫🇷 – 30 goals

The Kylian Mbappe threat
Lionel Messi is currently at 33 goals in La Liga this season, he only has four more matches to play in the competition.
The problem here is that the last competitive match in which he has to perform will be next Saturday against Levante.
Barcelona will win the title if they win that match and Messi will have more time to rest because he has more important things to worry about.
The Catalan club still has to play the Copa del Rey final against Valencia and the Champions League semifinals against Liverpool.
There is a big chance that Messi won’t play against Celta, Getafe, and Eibar. Kylian Mbappe has a different situation on his hands.
The French youngster still has five Ligue 1 matches to play against Montpellier, Nice, Angers, Dijon, and Stade de Reims.
PSG already won Ligue 1 this season but they don’t have to worry about any other competition apart from the Coue de France final against Rennes this weekend.
Mbappe’s hat-trick vs AS Monaco left him only three goals away from Leo Messi’s 33 goals and he obviously wants to get this individual award for the first time in his career.
Certainly, all his PSG teammates want him to win this trophy now that the club has at least one title in the bag.
This is why Messi might not win the Golden Boot this season and Kylian Mbappe might snatch it from him.
