Willian says that he is going to be wearing the number 10 shirt next season following the departure of Eden Hazard to Real Madrid.
Chelsea are going to see Willian become the club’s new number 10 after Eden Hazard’s departure left the iconic number up for grabs.
Initially, it was believed that Christian Pulisic would be wearing the number 10. However, it appears that Willian has already staked claim to the iconic jersey number. While Pulisic is expected to fill in for the Real Madrid man, the US international isn’t going to be worn down by such a huge responsibility at his age.
Instead, Willian is going to ditch the number 22 shirt he has been wearing since he arrived. The Brazil international is going to be wearing number ten.
“Number ten is now mine. The club has said it will change [my shirt number] and it will be mine,” Willian told Desimpedidos.
And Willian says that he had always wanted to play with the number 10 on his back.
He added: “I have always liked playing with number ten.
“Since I was a kid playing indoors football, I have always used the number ten. At Corinthians I was also number ten.”
With Willian set to wear the number 10 jersey, it remains to be seen what number Pulisic will be given. The youngster wore number 24 during his first outing for the Blues in a game against Kawasaki Frontale.
Callum Hudson-Odoi had also been tipped to wear the number ten shirt. However, at the age of 18, it would have been a huge pressure on the teenage winger. Currently, the youngster is nursing his way back from an Achilles injury and once he’s back, he will be welcomed by Willian who definitely has the experience and mental strength to inherit Hazard’s number.
