Axel Witsel suggests Borussia Dortmund players ought to contribute more defensively after their defeat against Hoffenheim on Saturday.
A disappointing 4-0 hammering at the hands of Hoffenheim saw Borussia Dortmund end the 2019/20 Bundesliga season on a low note.
Two goals in each half from Andrej Kramaric helped the visitors book a place in the Europa League qualifying rounds. As for the homes side, they had already secured a second-place finish but slipped 13 points behind champions Bayern Munich.
BVB boast one of the best attacks in Europe which is evident from the fact that they have scored 84 times in the league this season. However, having conceded 41 goals, defense has been an issue for them.
Axel Witsel criticized his team-mates for their horror show on Saturday while urging his side to give Bayern a better fight the next season.
Witsel told Sky Sport: “There is nothing to explain. They were more aggressive, had more motivation. We didn’t want to end the season like that.
“It wasn’t enough without a ball. We all have to defend together. If only a few players run and defend, it’s difficult to win a game. We may be the better team on paper, but it is different on the field.
“Next season we will start the fight with [Bayern Munich] again.”
