World Cup 2022 draw: Ronaldo and Messi discover group-stage opponents

Thirty two teams will battle it out for the right to be crowned world champions later this year.

The draw for the 2022 World Cup took place on Saturday. The participant nations discovered their group-stage opponents during a ceremony at Doha Exhibition and Convention Center in Doha, Qatar.

A host of football legends and celebrities were present during the draw, with the likes of Lothar Matthaus and Cafu assisting the process.

Hosts Qatar were paired with Netherlands, Senegal, and Ecuador in Group A. They will face Ecuador in the tournament’s opening game on November 21.

Two European powerhouses, Spain and Germany, will compete in the tournament’s toughest group. Japan and Costa Rica/ New Zealand will be the other members of Group E.

Cristiano Ronaldo will face his Manchester United teammate Edinson Cavani when Portugal meet Uruguay in Group H. Another major battle will take place in Group C, where Robert Lewandowski will lead Poland against Lionel Messi and co.
