The Chinese footballer had just recently been transferred to the Spanish La Liga club from Shanghai SIPG in his native country.
27-year-old winger Wu Lei started his professional career in 2006 with Chinese Super League side Shanghai SIPG.
In over twelve years, the right winger scored 151 goals in 296 matches.
And after his great performance with the China national team in the 2019 AFC Asian Cup, the player was bought by Spanish La Liga club Espanyol.
And today he got his debut with his new team.
“I am thrilled and I thank the coaching staff for using me in this match,” he said to Spanish media outlet Marca.
“[Rubi] told me where I had to play, and I’m happy for the confidence he has placed in me.”
“When I entered the game it was 2-1, and we were able to do something,” he commented about his debut.
“Wu Lei has become the second Chinese player to make an official appearance in LaLiga Santander.
Wu Lei is the second Chinese footballer to play for a La Liga side.
The first one was Zhang Chengdong, who played with Rayo Vallecano in the 2015-2016 season.
Wu Lei is also a critical player for the Chinese national team.
He debuted in 2007 with the U17 squad; then in 2009, he did the same with the U20.
It was in 2012 where he played his first senior squad game.
He scored two goals for China in the past Asian Cup, both of them against the Philippines in the 3-0 win at Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
His consistent scoring has helped him go beyond Asian football and now into La Liga.
