Barcelona legend Xavi has signed a one-year contract extension with Qatar side Al Sadd, all but ending speculation of an imminent return to the Camp Nou.

Xavi left Barcelona to end his playing days with a four-year lucrative stint in the oil-rich state of Qatar with Al Sadd.

Following that he assumed the role of head coach at the club and has been equally successful, picking up the Qatari Cup in his first year.

Being a veteran of Barcelona system, and climbing through the ranks of the club in a 20-year association he is seen as the ideal candidate to bring back real football to the Camp Nou.

Prior to the appointment of Quique Setien, he was widely considered the favorite to take charge and has since been continually linked with the role.

It now appears that any appointment will be even further in the future after Al Sadd confirmed the Spanish World Cup winner had signed a one-year extension on his current deal.

The player told the clubs official website:

“I am happy that the squad is complete today after the return of the remaining first-team players, in preparation for this upcoming period and the resumption of the league championship.”

“I am happy to continue with Al-Sadd, and the team’s goal will always be to compete for all titles.”

Change will certainly be afoot at Barcelona this summer should Real Madrid pip them the La Liga title. But just how much do you know about the Catalan giants?
