Sevilla striker Wissam Ben Yedder paid tribute to the missing Emiliano Sala after scoring in their shock 2-0 win over Barcelona on Wednesday

The Frenchman knows Sala from his time at Toulouse, where he lined up against the former Nantes star in Ligue 1 matches.

Upon scoring Sevilla’s second goal to seal their first-leg victory over Barcelona in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals, Ben Yedder lifted his shirt to reveal a message.

“For my brother. Strength. E. Sala,” it read on Twitter.

Pablo Sarabia was the other scorer for Sevilla on the night at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan as Pablo Machin’s side take a 2-0 aggregate lead into next Wednesday’s return leg at Camp Nou.

Meanwhile, Sala has been missing since Monday evening after his aeroplane disappeared as he flew over the English Channel from Nantes to Wales.

The 28-year-old, who had sealed a club-record transfer of £15m to Cardiff City on Saturday, has been searched for ever since along with his pilot David Ibbotson.

The search and rescue effort for the pair has had no success with Guernsey Police announcing on Wednesday evening that a decision will be made on whether or not to continue today.

Suarez wants Liverpool to pip Man City to title glory

Luis Suarez believes Liverpool now have the quality to win the Premier League title as they battle with Manchester City to claim the league title. The Reds...

Speaking on the matter, former pilot Alastair Rosenchein announced that the plane could well have iced up due to the wintry conditions over the English Channel.

“It’s already a fairly risky crossing to do in a single engine aircraft, especially in winter and definitely at night,” he said.

“There are icing problems too. It’s a strange thing to do though to go and fly over water with one engine at night in winter because if your engine goes you’re going into the water.”

The Guernsey Police also announced on Wednesday that their search is now being focused on the possibility that both Sala and Ibbotson boarded a life raft.
