Although Real Madrid won their home match against Eibar, 3-0, Cristiano Ronaldo had another night to forget at Santiago Bernabeu.
The Portuguese continues his frustrating start of the season, having scored only one goal in the 2017/2018 La Liga season. Furthermore, Ronaldo tried his luck 33 times (registered shots), an alarming sign of inefficiency by the player expected to win FIFA’s Best Men player award tonight in London.
Real Madrid had no problems securing the three points against Eibar, with Asensio and Marcelo adding to the own goal of Paulo Oliveira. Only 24 hours before the awarding of FIFA’s trophy recognising the best male player in football, for which Cristiano Ronaldo is hot favourite, the Portuguese put on another awful performance, once again proving his inefficiency in front of goal in La Liga. Ronaldo even missed a one-on-one situation with Eibar’s goalkeeper, Dimitrovic.
However, according to ESPN, Zidane is not worried about his player’s chances to pick up the award later this evening. The French manager is certain that Ronaldo’s contribution to winning La Liga and Champions League last season will prove decisive: “Ronaldo is the best player of his generation, by a long way. He has shown that many times, he makes the difference in the big games. It is very deserved what he is winning tomorrow, all his prizes are deserved. He always shows he wants to be the best, and he is.”
Furthermore, Zidane claims that he is not worried about his star man’s inefficiency in front of goal: “When Cristiano does not score I get asked always the same thing. We are not worried, although it is better when he scores. It is important for him, but the most important is that he is getting chances. This lasts a long time. He is top scorer in the Champions League, and has a chance to score again next week in La Liga [at Girona].”
