Reports in the Spanish press claim Zinedine Zidane wants a ‘new Raphael Varane’ for Real Madrid and believes Benoit Badiashile is the man for the job.

Fresh from winning La Liga with the best defensive record of the campaign, Zidane would be forgiven for relaxing a little. Like many true champions, though, the Real Madrid boss never eases off the gas; aware that even in this very moment his rivals are plotting to overhaul his side.

Reports have frequently linked Zidane with moves for exciting young forwards like Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe over the past year. He’s even made it no secret of his interest in the latter.

Although Florentino Perez’s recent announcement that Real Madrid won’t pursue big-money signings because of the COVID-19 financial implications has but ruled out all moves for the pair. That’s not to say there won’t be any new arrivals, though.

In fact, Spanish outlet Diario AS claims Zidane has regularly scouted Ligue 1 for the latest young pearls. And he’s now laid eyes on Monaco center-back Benoit Badiashile.

The 19-year-old has been a regular for the Monegasques in the last two seasons. He’s already got 46 appearances under his belt, earning praise for his displays in defense in the process. It prompted Monaco to award him a new long-term contract last December until 2024.

Moreover, Badiashile’s tall frame and rapid progress in his native France has led to him being dubbed a ‘new Varane’.

Gabriel (Lille) and Mohammed Salisu (Valladolid) are also allegedly on Zidane’s shortlist for this summer, as is Dayot Upamecano (Leipzig). Although the latter has just signed a new deal at Leipzig.
