While understandably disappointed, Zinedine Zidane encouraged his Real Madrid to be proud of all their progress this season.

Hopes of a remarkable 14th Champions League title ended on Friday night as Real Madrid crashed out of the last-16 stage through a 4-2 aggregate defeat to Manchester City.

The Spanish giants gave it their all, but fell to another 2-1 defeat in the second leg against City.

Karim Benzema briefly restored hope of a comeback by cancelling out Raheem Sterling’s early opener. However, Gabriel Jesus’ second-half goal sealed Madrid’s fate.

It was also the first time Zidane suffered a knockout-stage exit in the Champions League as a manager, having won the competition in his previous three attempts.

But Zizou, who guided Los Blancos to La Liga glory recently, is proud of the team’s progress nonetheless.

“We can’t be happy obviously, we have lost the game and we are out,” said Zidane, as quoted by the BBC.

“We are proud of what we achieved this season, this is football. We lost to a good team and have to accept it. We had our chances to score.

“95% of what we achieved this season has been excellent. We have to accept this.We need to be very proud of what we have achieved.”
