Zinedine Zidane was unsurprisingly delighted with Karim Benzema after the Real Madrid star was again on target in their 5-0 win over CD Leganes.
Benzema made it seven goals in just nine La Liga appearances for Real Madrid this season by scoring a second-half penalty as Zidane’s side thrashed city rivals Leganes 5-0 on Wednesday night.
Although that was just one small part of the story as Benzema also chipped in two assists. In fact, they both came inside the opening eight minutes for Rodrygo Goes and Toni Kroos’ goals.
Sergio Ramos then put away a penalty to put Real into a commanding three-goal lead before the break.
After a couple of near-misses, Benzema finally got his deserved goal when Luka Modric was brought down in the area.
The Frenchman kept his composure to fire the ball past Leganes keeper Juan Soriano in the 69th-minute. Substitute Luka Jovic later added a fifth in stoppage-time.
“I think he’s getting the recognition,” said Zidane on the club’s website.
“You have to show it on a regular basis and he’s always doing that well beyond his goal scoring, which is important for him as the Madrid number nine.
“What I like about Benzema is how he links up with his teammates.”
After a 1-0 defeat to RCD Mallorca cost them top spot in La Liga to Barcelona last time out, Real’s big win enabled them to stay within a point of the Catalan giants in second.
“It was an important game for us,” added Los Blancos boss Zidane.
“We started very well, scored two goals, and that made the game easier for us. I’m not sure it was our best game of the season. But I’m happy with the result, getting five goals and keeping a clean sheet.
“We have to be satisfied and pleased over the ninety minutes.”
