Gianfranco Zola admits he is surprised at Andrea Pirlo’s appointment as Juventus’ boss, insisting the task is not an easy one.
While his name was being bandied around, he was never really considered a serious contender. After all, he was only appointed the U23 boss a week earlier in his very first management job of any description.
It appears that not only were we the fans left in shock at the decision, but even those in and around the sport at the highest level were also surprised.
Italian legend Gianfranco Zola admits he is a little shocked at Pirlo’s appointment and also a little concerned.
Speaking to Sky Sports Italia, the former Chelsea man thinks the task placed in the hands of Pirlo is not an easy one.
“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t surprised by this.”
“It’s fascinating and if the project works, it’ll go down as a huge success story for the club. It’s not an easy job, though, as Juventus are asking to win in a certain way.”
“This is a courageous move from the club and based on the quality of the man, but Pirlo will need their support going forward. It’s not simple, but I do think he can have real success.”
Zola believes one of the first orders of business for the new man-in-charge is to let his players know who the boss is, especially if they used to be teammates.
“This has to be set aside straight away. The players need to see him as a coach and Pirlo must immediately feel comfortable in that new guise.”
