Xabi Alonso says he almost joined Barcelona before he decided to join Real Madrid.
The 35-year-old midfielder left Liverpool back in 2009 and joined Real Madrid. Here he won La Liga, Champions League, Copa del Rey and Supercopa de Espana before joining Bayern Munich back in 2014.
Although, all this could be very different – had it not been for Sergio Busquets.
Xabi Alonso told El Pais following about a possible Barcelona move back in 2009.
– It happened not long before I left for Real Madrid. Liverpool told me that they wanted to sell me, Rafael Benitez too, and Pep showed an interest in my situation.
– He wanted to sign me because, as he told Rafa, I was the type of player who would fit his playing model. But he had doubts because Busquets had just come through and had the makings of a tremendous player.
– Guardiola chose him, and he wasn’t proved wrong.
Xabi Alonso then joined Real Madrid instead and later on linked up with Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich years later.
Xabi Alonso is set to retire from football at the end of this season. He has made 23 appearances in this Bundesliga campaign as they are eight points clear in the top of the table.
Xabi Alonso will play his former side in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday with kick off at 20:45 CET.
Bayern Munich lost the first leg 2-1 and needs a victory at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.
